Irish advertisements that made history (and stole our hearts)

17 March 2025

Ah, St Patrick’s Day – the one day a year everyone in Ireland gets together and celebrates their Irish heritage with exciting and fun-filled parades and of course, drinks one too many green Guinnesses. For me, though, it’s a time to feel a little nostalgic about home. As an Irish copywriter now living in the UK, I can’t help but think about what makes Ireland so special.

And naturally, my mind wanders to one of my great loves: advertising.

Ireland has a knack for creating ads that stick with you – whether they make you laugh or tug at the heartstrings, or just remind you of home.

From heartwarming stories to humour and cultural pride – Irish brands have mastered some classic advertisements.

So, in honour of this special day – I want to remember some important ads that made Irish history.

  1. Barry’s Tea – ‘Train Set’ (2008)

If you’ve somehow managed to avoid Barry’s Tea, are you even Irish? This ad beautifully captures the simple yet powerful bond between a father and son, all tied together by a good old cup of tea. It’s warm, nostalgic, and makes you want to ring your mam for a chat (preferably with a cuppa in hand).

  1. Kerrygold – ‘Who’s Taking the Horse to France?’ (2002)

Kerrygold butter is a national treasure, and so is this ad. A classic example of Irish wit, it tells the story of a hilarious family misunderstanding about who (or what) is actually going to France. The charming dialogue and playful tone made it an instant classic and a reminder that Irish humour is second to none.

  1. ESB – ‘Going Home’ (1980s)

Going way back to the 80s, this ad tells the emotional story of a young man returning home after being away for a long time. The heartwarming music and the joy of a family reunion make it one of Ireland’s most beloved commercials. Warning: may cause unexpected eye leaks.

  1. Tayto – Mr. Tayto’s Adventures

Ah, Mr. Tayto. The crisp-loving legend himself. For anyone who’s living under a rock, this potato-shaped icon has been at the heart of countless ads, books, and even political campaigns (yes, really). His cheeky charm and playful personality have cemented Tayto as an Irish household staple. Long live Mr. Tayto!

A Toast to Irish Advertising

Ireland has always been a nation of storytellers, and our ads are no exception. Whether they make us laugh, cry, or just crave a nice hot cup of tea, they reflect the creativity, warmth, and humour that make Ireland so special.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to make a Barry’s Tea and dream of Tayto crisps.

Sláinte!

Agus Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh!
